What Are The Adityas?

Most people are familiar with the twelve signs of the zodiac, but few have heard of the twelve Adityas.
The Adityas are ancient Vedic deities associated with the Sun. Each represents a universal principle that sustains life. They aren’t simply personalities or mythological figures. They describe twelve different ways divine intelligence expresses itself through the world and through us.
In Vedic astrology, each Aditya corresponds to one of the twelve signs. Looking at the signs through the Adityas gives them greater depth. Instead of seeing a sign as a collection of personality traits, we begin to understand its purpose and the particular way it expresses love, wisdom, and growth.
One Aditya teaches companionship. Another teaches support. Another reveals courage, while another shows us truth, creativity, guidance, healing, or abundance. Together, they remind us that there is no single right way to move through life. Each expression has its own gifts, its own challenges, and its own contribution to make.
The Adityas have been described in the Vedas and later Hindu scriptures for thousands of years, yet they are rarely discussed in modern astrology. Their symbolism offers a practical way to understand ourselves and our relationships while remaining deeply rooted in one of the world’s oldest spiritual traditions.
Over the coming weeks, I’ll be exploring each of the twelve Adityas, what they represent, and how they can help us better understand ourselves and one another.
